A search for private schools in Sweden can lead to quite different options: independent schools following the Swedish curriculum, international programmes and boarding schools. Start with the curriculum your child needs, then check the language of instruction, admission eligibility and the amount your family would actually pay.
This directory covers 11 school and campus profiles in eight listed locations. It includes different types of school, rather than a complete list of Sweden’s private schools or a quality ranking.
Are private schools in Sweden free?
Independent ownership does not automatically mean fee-paying education. Skolverket explains that compulsory schooling is generally free and that municipal international schools follow the same fee rules. Independent international schools have separate provisions allowing reasonable fees for additional costs associated with their international education. The school’s status and your child’s funding eligibility therefore matter more than the word “private”.
For a concrete fee-paying example, Stockholm International School publishes annual tuition of SEK 135,000 for grades 1–5 in 2026–27, plus a SEK 3,000 application fee and a one-time SEK 60,000 enrolment fee. These are different charges, not a single annual price. The school says families must also meet any government-contribution shortfall; where a student does not qualify, the contribution amount is payable in addition to the listed tuition. Ask for a written total for your child’s grade and municipality before comparing budgets.
Choose a realistic daily journey before comparing schools across the country. A school with Stockholm in its name may have campuses outside the city centre. Check the address for your child’s stage, then test the commute at school arrival time.
English-language schools, IB and Swedish programmes
Teaching in English and following an international curriculum are separate choices. Ask which programme is taught in the intended class, which subjects use English or Swedish, and which qualification the student will work towards. A school-wide IB label does not establish that every age group offers the IB Diploma.
British International School of Stockholm describes a route through primary education, secondary IGCSEs and the IB Diploma at ages 16–18. Its official website lists Altorp and Ekeby campuses with different addresses. For an older student, compare the transition and subject choices rather than assuming that entry to one stage guarantees a place in the next.
For a student approaching their final school years, our IB and A levels comparison explains the different course structures. Use it to frame questions about subjects and workload; then confirm the actual courses with the Swedish school.
Boarding schools in Sweden
SSHL in Sigtuna explicitly welcomes boarding and day students. It offers Swedish senior high school programmes and an IB route in English. Compare the academic programme separately from accommodation, and ask which boarding arrangement, holiday provision and charges apply to the proposed entry year.
For families considering boarding or continuity in the French or German education systems, the following schools offer further starting points. Lycée Français Saint Louis has a SchoolMatch profile in the comparison above. Lundsberg and Tyska Skolan are additional options outside those filters; follow their official source links below.
Lundsbergs Skola — Storfors
Lundsberg publishes boarding arrangements for grade 9 and upper-secondary years 1–3. Its 2026–27 annual boarding charge is SEK 367,000 for the specified Swedish, Nordic and eligible Swedish-abroad categories, after the applicable funding deductions. For other foreign students, the listed charge is SEK 467,000. A SEK 5,000 application fee and SEK 13,000 new-student deposit are separate. Confirm your eligibility and the full offer before comparing this with a day-school tuition figure.
Upper-secondary school admission and boarding admission use separate applications. School places follow the regional admissions process; boarding applications go to Lundsberg. Families applying with overseas qualifications should check the required documents with the admissions team.
LFSL offers continuity in the French education system at Essingestråket 24, Stockholm. French is the language used for teaching and examinations. Its 2026–27 annual tuition is SEK 14,550 for CP–CM2, SEK 16,020 for 6ème–3ème and SEK 18,210 for 2nde–Terminale when the published Swedish registration and funding conditions are met.
The full annual rate is SEK 157,590 where municipal funding has not been guaranteed when a place is offered, with an additional eligibility condition for upper-secondary pupils whose parents are outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland. Preschool and after-school care have separate income-based charges. Ask which rate applies to your family before accepting a place.
Deutsche Schule Stockholm / Tyska Skolan — Stockholm
The German school offers a pathway from kindergarten to the German International Abitur and the Swedish Examensbevis. Its kindergarten at Karlavägen 25 serves children aged 1–5 in German and Swedish. From grade 5, teaching is in German apart from specified Swedish subjects; Swedish also serves as a teaching language for Swedish history and social studies.
Applicants transferring into grades 2–11 need German and mathematics at the required level, demonstrated through school reports or entry tests. The school offers support for pupils learning Swedish. Check the current application window for the intended class: preschool, first-grade and later-entry applicants have different routes.
Entry and eligibility: give the intended start date, current grade and previous curriculum. Ask which residence, municipal registration or other criteria apply.
Places and process: ask about vacancies, waiting lists, documents and deadlines for the specific class. Avoid assuming that another school’s application timetable applies.
Full cost: request the academic year, billing period, subsidy assumptions, compulsory charges and any boarding costs in writing.
Campus and next stage: confirm the address, daily travel and what happens when the child moves to the next programme.
